Albert Fonze Ponze had nothing to do.

What can I do
With Nothing to do
Tell me
Tell me
Tell me

Albert sang. It was his very own song. He sang it again.

What can I do
With Nothing to do
Tell me
Tell me
Tell me

Singing his song made Albert Fonze Ponze feel good. But when his song was ended, he still had nothing to do.

His mother stopped writing at her computer. Mom.jpg (6855 bytes)

"Albert, dear," his mother said, "since you've nothing to do, why don't you read a book."

"No," said Albert.

His father put down the cake he had just baked for the family's dinner. "Albert," his wpe4.jpg (3971 bytes)father said,"since you've nothing to do, why don't you go outside and throw your high-bouncer against the steps?"

"No," Albert said.

The house-painter Roy put down his brush and said, "Albert, since you've got nothing to do, why don't you come outside and help me paint the house?"wpe2.jpg (3120 bytes)

"No," Albert said.

Uncle Paul came up from the basement carrying his hammer and nails and wpe5.jpg (3672 bytes)said, "Albert, why don't you come and help me fix the basement?"

"No," Albert said.

wpe6.jpg (7827 bytes)Albert's dog, Basil, got up and came to Albert. Basil pushed Albert's arm with his nose. Then he pushed his hand with his nose. Then he licked his face.

"No," Albert said.

All the big people frowned and went back to their jobs. Albert's dog Basil flopped on his bed, sighed deeply, and went to sleep.

Albert sat on the floor in his room. He was so unhappy.

Somehow, Albert didn't know how, one of his hands popped wpe8.jpg (10718 bytes)the top off his toy chest. Then the other hand pulled the chest over. Lots of stuff tumbled out. Big stuff, little stuff, squiggly strip of red cloth he'd found alongside the trail last year the time he'd helped his mother solve the medical mystery. The cloth would make a perfect road for the truck. And here was the pencil his grandmother had given him wpe9.jpg (31711 bytes)on his third birthday. If he put it under the cloth, it would make a perfect bump on the road. Then the road could run under a corner of the bed and out the other side. There were so many possibilities.

Albert decided this day was going to be a fine day after all. Albert Fonze Ponze had something wonderful to do.

almost the end
